Welcome to Timisoara

about

Timișoara is one of Romania’s most vibrant and elegant cities, known for its historic architecture, cultural diversity, and relaxed atmosphere. Often called “Little Vienna”, the city reflects strong Central European influences shaped over centuries by Romanian, Hungarian, German, and Serbian communities.

With a population of approximately 320,000 people, Timișoara is the largest city in western Romania and an important economic, cultural, and academic center. The city has long been known for its openness and progressive spirit. In fact, Timișoara was the first European city to introduce electric street lighting in 1884, earning it the nickname “The City of Lights.”

The city also holds an important place in modern European history. In December 1989, the events that led to the fall of Romania’s communist regime began in Timișoara, making it the first Romanian city declared free from dictatorship.

Today, Timișoara combines this rich history with a modern and creative energy. Its historic center is built around three beautiful squares, Piața Unirii, Piața Libertății, and Piața Victoriei all within walking distance and filled with cafés, restaurants, and cultural landmarks.

The city is also a growing hub for technology, design, and innovation. In 2023, Timișoara was named European Capital of Culture, highlighting its vibrant arts scene and international outlook.
